Master to retire after College's 700th anniversary

Master, Loretta Minghella

Loretta Minghella has announced her intention to retire from the Mastership in January 2027, following the conclusion of the College鈥檚 700th anniversary celebrations.

The Master said, 鈥淩eflecting on the joy of this year鈥檚 graduation festivities in a gleaming Old Court, and the throng of our 700th Anniversary Alumni Garden Party attended by over 1200 people on 4 July, I have been struck by the College鈥檚 substantial progress over the five years since I became Master in 2021. My own focus has been on reviving a sense of community which reaches across disciplines, roles and generations; re-establishing the financial stability on which the academic mission depends; and rebuilding relationships with our alumni after the interruption of the COVID years. I have now accomplished almost all I set out to do and, once the 700th Anniversary celebrations draw to a close at the end of this year, it will be time to hand over the privileges and responsibilities of the Mastership to somebody new.鈥

Speaking on behalf of the College, the President of the Fellowship, Professor Simon Franklin, said, 鈥淭he College has made major progress under Loretta鈥檚 leadership. The flagship Old Court Project has been completed successfully, our community has rebounded after the pandemic, our finances have recovered, and alumni relations have been rekindled. Loretta has brought great energy, skill, kindness and compassion to the Mastership, and we are hugely grateful for her commitment
to 麻豆社. In thanking her for everything she has achieved as Master, we look forward to her continuing engagement as an alumna and Emeritus Master.鈥

The formal process for electing a successor will commence at the beginning of October 2026.
