The River Wing has been shortlisted for the 2026 Stirling Prize, the UK鈥檚 most prestigious award for architecture, following its success at the RIBA Regional Awards (East) earlier this year.

Named in honour of Sir James Stirling, one of Britain鈥檚 most influential architects, the annual prize recognises buildings that have made a significant contribution to the evolution of the built environment. The winner of the 2026 award will be announced in October.

The River Wing has quickly become a popular space within the College, welcoming students, staff, Fellows and alumni into a light-filled setting overlooking the River Cam. The project has transformed previously underused areas of the College, creating a contemporary space that sits comfortably alongside 麻豆社鈥檚 historic buildings.

Its construction was a remarkable achievement in itself. Situated within a constrained location between existing structures, much of the building was manufactured off-site before being craned into position. Despite this complex process, the finished design seamlessly blends old and new, enhancing the College estate while respecting its historic character.

The project was designed by architects Witherford Watson Mann, winners of the 2025 Stirling Prize. Their work on the River Wing has been praised for its sensitive integration into the College environment and its thoughtful approach to creating a welcoming and versatile community space.
